#6 Pioneer, Barkley Marathon and Backyard Ultra with Lazarus Lake
Rune Larsson is a Swedish runner and this is his podcast. Episode #6 is notable for being the only one in English (so far) and also for being an interview with Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake, race director of the Barkley Marathons and Big’s Backyard Ultra.
A quick look at Rune’s website reveals that he’s a 2:18 marathoner and completed Spartathlon 10 times, winning in 1987, 1988 and 1993. He and Cantrell were running ultras together before they were cool and they have an obvious mutual respect and rapport.
In this discussion you can expect to learn about:
- The backstory of “Big” of “Big’s Backyard Ultra”
- Qualities of a successful backyard ultra runner
- The rise of backyard ultras
- Cantrell’s background in running
- How the Barkley Marathons got started
- Why he’s called Lazarus Lake
“In middle distance running it’s about oxygen deficiency, in marathon running it’s about glycogen deficiency, in ultra distance running it’s just about deficiency.” – Gary Cantrell
At 57 mins this podcast would be great for an easy few miles plus warm up and/or strength routine. If you enjoyed the Barkley Marathons documentary and particularly Cantrell’s screentime then I think you’ll like this podcast. For me it’s a total pleasure and diversion to run while listening to two such fascinating characters talk running and share stories.
